about

"Written when I was approaching forty, this song touches on the conflicting emotions of approaching middle age. 'In the prime of my life, I'm absolutely in denial of everything I ever thought I knew.' Suddenly, what used to be common knowledge is brought into question, and nothing is what it appears to be. Who is the 'whats-his-name' in the lyric? A fictional figure, a long-lost friend, or some other incarnation of myself? Perhaps me when I was younger and more naive, or some sort of spirit guide? Whoever he is, he seems to come and go as he pleases, appearing in the least likely places, then disappearing without a trace. When I recorded the song, I had just bought myself a 'Cry Baby' wah-wah pedal, so I put it to use right away for both the rhythm and lead guitar parts. The title of the song came to me first, one lazy summer afternoon as I was lounging out by the pool." - ALJ, April 2002

lyrics

In the prime of my life
I’m absolutely in denial of everything I ever thought I knew
There’s a face in the crowd
Smiles at me sweetly
Just like someone I’d known before when all the world was new

I will never forget what’s-his-name
He’s driving down the highway in an angry wilderness
He is there in my reflection
And he’s there in your embrace
And his name is in the embers
Nearly lost without a trace

I will never forget what's-his-name
I will never forget what's-his-name
I will never forget what's-his-name, whats-his-name
I will never forget what's-his-name

I am passing in time
Surface in memory
I follow in the footsteps
Of the man who fell from grace
I am passing my prime
Lost in a desert
Where the wind is so hot
That I’m afraid to show my face

I will never forget what’s-his-name
He’s driving down the highway in an angry wilderness
He is there in my reflection
And he’s there in your embrace
And his name is in the embers
Nearly lost without a trace

I will never forget what's-his-name
I will never forget what's-his-name
I will never forget what's-his-name, whats-his-name
I will never forget what's-his-name
